Featuring more than 3,000 aquatic specimens, the North Carolina Aquarium is the state's largest saltwater aquarium.  Exhibits are based around different marine habitats and emphasize native ecosystems. Visitors may also be fascinated by the "Living Shipwreck" exhibit, which includes a life-size replica of a German U-352 submarine with a 60-foot viewing window.

The North Carolina Aquarium was founded in 1976 and is dedicated to promoting awareness of aquatic resources and their appreciation. Several of its exhibits are interactive, and visitors can touch and interact with stingrays and starfish. There is even an exhibit about the legendary whale-eating shark Megalodon. This exhibit includes touch screens and holograms. Visitors can also see animals native to the region, such as the spotted scorpionfish.

Another expansion that opened to the public in 2014 is the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center. This is a 3,000-square-foot facility that includes eight tanks, an examination room, food preparation areas, and storage space. Visitors can see the turtle patients throughout the year and learn about their recovery stories from aquarium staff members. The animals are also released with satellite transmitters.
