Houston is ranked 18th and has some of the best BBQs in the country. Houston offers a variety of meats, specialties and smokehouses.

Greater Houston has emerged as the epicenter for the new era in smoked meat dominance. With several new pitmasters bringing their magic to the table, barbecue fans can expect some amazing dishes. Pork shoulder is a staple of East Texas barbecue. The pork shoulder is a tender, fatty cut that's slowly smoked on hickory. Then, it's served with a thick sauce made from tomato.

In the East, beef brisket also is a favorite. Franklin Barbecue is a king of brisket. The family-owned restaurant has been around since 1932 and is known for its brisket. It recently opened in Houston. The Houston Barbecue Company is another Houston hotspot, with its homey atmosphere and oak-fired pit smoked meats like briskets, sausages & ribs.

In recent years, the Houston BBQ scene has exploded. Pop-ups and food trucks are available, as well as high-end restaurants. One thing is certain: Houston's culinary scene still revolves around barbecue. There's something to suit everyone, whether you're looking for brisket or chicken, ribs or a fried-chicken sandwich. All at reasonable prices.
