While reaching Maryland's highest point may seem daunting, the trail to Hoye-Crest is surprisingly accessible.  However, there's a catch: the journey begins in neighboring West Virginia. Hikers must start at a trailhead along Route 219, just south of Silver Lake, West Virginia, before ascending Backbone Mountain via an old logging road on Monongahela National Forest property.

The trail, marked with orange blazes, winds through a picturesque forest, gradually gaining elevation as it approaches the Maryland border. After approximately a mile, hikers cross the state line and continue north along a ridgetop path leading to Hoye-Crest.

Upon reaching the summit, hikers are greeted by a Maryland Historical Society marker commemorating the state's highest point. Access is permitted while the peak is on private property, allowing visitors to soak in the panoramic views and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
