WEST VIRGINIA - You can visit Seneca Rocks State Park while driving through the Monongahela National Forest, which is about 100,000 acres and covers the north central portion of the state. This park is home to Seneca Rocks, which are jagged towers of stone up to 900 feet high. Several rock climbers have made Seneca Rocks one of their favorite roadside attractions. You can even enjoy a catch-and-release fishing area here. The park also offers educational displays.
Seneca Rocks State Park - West Virginia
This natural landmark is West Virginia's most popular destination. It rises almost 900 feet above the North Fork River. This area is home to numerous white/gray Tuscarora quartzite formations, such as Seneca Rocks. Nearby Champe Rocks are another imposing example. You can explore the rock formations by taking the 1.3-mile interpretive trail. While you are here, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the valley below.
You can also enjoy the sweeping views of the mountains from the Dolly Sods Overlook. You'll get a close look at the rugged terrain and a frog in a stylized lily pad. The harsh winters leave the foliage with an oddly distorted appearance. In particular, the red spruce trees have branches on their east sides due to strong west winds.
If you're looking for a unique experience, Seneca Rocks State Park is one of the best roadside attractions in West Virginia. This is a 4.5 million-year-old cave that features unusual geological formations. You can also visit the Droop Mountain Battlefield, a historic site at 3104 feet. The battlefield is another must-see on the road to Seneca Rocks.
You can also take your kids on a BASE jump at Seneca Rocks State Park's Bridge Day festival, held every October. The park's Bridge Day waterfall is colored by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. In addition to the falls, you'll find several other popular locations at the park, including Pendleton Point and Bald Knob.
