The third lighthouse was a frame structure. It was destroyed in a heavy storm. The fourth lighthouse was a wood lantern with glass windows. It was of low quality and was often compared to a lightning bug.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts built the fifth lighthouse, a low-quality structure. It lasted only two years. It burned down in a storm in 1786. A more elaborate structure replaced it.
