The Mattress Factory Is A Contemporary Art Museum

Barbara Luderowski founded the Mattress Factory as an educational and cultural non-profit in 1977.  Since then, the institution has become an integral part of the Pittsburgh arts community. A pioneer in alternative art forms, the Mattress Factory has fostered the career of numerous artists.

Located in a historic warehouse in the Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh's North Side, the Mattress Factory is ideal for the city's contemporary art. As the museum's name suggests, the institution's primary mission is to support artists' creative pursuits and inspire individuals to explore creative thinking.

In addition to showcasing the work of local, national, and international artists, the museum is also home to a wide array of educational programs. These include workshops, lectures, and hands-on art projects.

Exhibits at the Mattress Factory are paired with educational programs that foster the creative thinking of all audiences. In particular, the exhibits are designed to encourage visitors to take a closer look and engage with the art.

The museum is named because the main gallery is situated in the former Stearns & Foster mattress factory warehouse. Although the building was abandoned in the past, it was creatively renovated by Luderowski to house a contemporary art space.
