Unlike quiet closures that leave diners guessing, the Alton franchise operators left a candid farewell message on the entrance. Management explained that despite exploring every possible avenue to keep operations afloat, the restaurant was overwhelmed by a dual crisis: severe, persistent staffing shortages and escalating operating expenses that made daily buffet service economically unsustainable.

Buffet models demand higher staffing ratios than traditional sit-down or fast-casual concepts, requiring dedicated teams for carving stations, back-of-house prep, continuous hot-bar restocking, and dishwashing. When labor pools tightened across the St. Louis metro area, keeping the sprawling Alton facility fully staffed became an insurmountable hurdle.

Patrons seeking their buffet fix are now being redirected to remaining regional locations across the greater metro area, including Shiloh, Illinois, and O’Fallon, Missouri.
