A Legacy of Firsts and Milestones:

From its humble beginnings with 600 animals, including a pair of curassows gifted by President Ulysses S. Grant, the Philadelphia Zoo has consistently pushed the boundaries of animal care and education. It boasts a history of groundbreaking achievements, including the establishment of the first animal health laboratory in 1901, the first successful births of an orangutan and chimpanzee in a U.S. zoo in 1928, and the opening of the first Children's Zoo in the country in 1938.

The zoo's dedication to conservation is evident in its 50 years of continuous accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a testament to its unwavering commitment to animal welfare and education.
