Travel Map IconTEXAS - The Texas retail market—long known for its massive shopping complexes and luxury corridors—is facing a significant shakeup this season. As the "retail apocalypse" narrative evolves into a series of strategic bankruptcies and digital pivots, several household-name fashion brands are entering the final stages of liquidation. From the high-traffic centers of Dallas and Houston to community malls in Corpus Christi, these departures represent a major shift in the State commercial landscape.

Here are four iconic clothing retailers shuttering Texas locations this spring.

1. Express (Corpus Christi & Statewide)

Express, the fashion powerhouse that once defined "millennial mall style," is in the midst of a rapid downsizing following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The Columbus-based retailer is closing over 100 stores nationwide to stabilize its finances for a potential acquisition.

In Texas, the impact is being felt across multiple markets. Most notably, the La Palmera location in Corpus Christi is among the high-profile sites slated for closure this spring. Other underperforming stores in major metro areas like Dallas and Houston have also seen "store closing" signs as the brand shifts toward its smaller, boutique-style "Express Edit" shops. Final sales are expected to wrap up by early May 2026.

2. Rue21 (San Antonio & San Marcos)

In one of the most drastic closures of the year, teen apparel giant Rue21 is shutting down all 540 of its U.S. locations after filing for its third bankruptcy. Unlike previous attempts to save the brand, no buyer emerged to keep the physical stores open, leading to a total liquidation of its brick-and-mortar assets.

Texas is losing dozens of locations this spring, including popular spots in:

Inventory clear-outs are moving quickly, with most Texas sites expected to be completely dark by late May 2026.

3. Eddie Bauer (All Locations)

The outdoor outfitter Eddie Bauer is officially exiting the physical retail space this spring. After 106 years in business, the operator of the brand’s 175 stores failed to find a buyer during bankruptcy proceedings. While the brand will continue to live on through e-commerce and wholesale partnerships, the days of browsing the racks in person are coming to an end.

With a strong presence in Texas's most popular outdoor-lifestyle centers, the loss of these shops will be felt from The Galleria in Houston to NorthPark Center in Dallas. Liquidation sales are scheduled to conclude by late spring 2026, with all sales final as of this month.

4. Francesca’s (All Remaining Locations)

In a heavy blow to the Houston-born brand, Francesca’s is liquidating all 400 of its boutiques following a second bankruptcy filing. The chain, which once operated nearly 700 locations, cited a loss of investor funding and difficulty competing with online fast-fashion giants.

Texas shoppers are losing their neighborhood boutiques in several high-traffic hubs, including:

"Going Out of Business" signs have been a fixture throughout the spring, and most Texas boutiques are expected to be fully vacated by mid-May 2026.

The New Era of Texas Shopping

Closed Store SignThe departure of these clothing icons leaves millions of square feet vacant across Texas. However, the state’s real estate developers are already looking toward "experiential" replacements. Many of these former apparel spaces are being redeveloped into entertainment hubs, medical suites, or luxury residential units, reflecting a broader trend where Texas malls are transforming into multi-use lifestyle destinations.
