The Mark Twain House & Museum features the home where author Samuel L. Clemens, more commonly known as Mark Twain, lived and wrote his famous works. Visitors are welcome to explore this 1874 mansion while viewing thousands of artifacts such as his desk where Twain wrote his novels.
At the turn of the 20th century, Connecticut was an oasis for American Impressionist painters to gather and paint en plein air, particularly at places like Holley House in Cos Cob/Greenwich and Miss Florence Griswold's boardinghouse in Old Lyme. Artists such as J Alden Weir, William Chadwick, Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson and John Twachtman experimented with new ways of viewing landscapes by translating its spontaneity and delicacy into oil paintings while also incorporating its colors and flatten perspectives from Japanese woodblock print designs.
Hartford was also the site of America's inaugural witchcraft trials 30 years before those held in Salem. From 1647-1663, accusations and trials took place, leading to eleven people including Alice Young being executed; now marked by a monument along Charter Oak Avenue.
