Originally built by Alfred I. du Pont, the estate includes the 102-room Nemours Mansion, an excellent example of a Louis XVI chateau. The architect, Carrere, and Hastings of New York City designed the mansion in 1909 and built it in 1910 by Smyth and Son of Wilmington. The mansion is furnished with period antiques and has a rich collection of period paintings. The gardens are modeled after Versailles and include a working carillon tower and extensive formal French gardens.
Visitors are invited to spend an entire day or half-day exploring the gardens. The three-hour tour includes the mansion, the gardens, and a carnation and umbrella. Unlike house museums, you will interact with the inhabitants, who are usually friendly and welcoming. Regardless of your age, you'll be impressed with the beauty of the setting and the details of the home.
