Black Bears in Ohio: Population, Sightings, and Safety

OHIO - While black bears were once abundant in Ohio before European settlement, unregulated hunting and massive habitat loss extirpated them from the state by the 1850s. Today, however, these resilient animals are making a slow but steady comeback.


As the forests in neighboring states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia have thrived and their bear populations have expanded, black bears have naturally begun crossing the borders back into the Buckeye State.

The Statistics on Ohio's Bear Population

Unlike some of its eastern neighbors, Ohio does not have a massive, established bear population. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) closely monitors sightings to track their numbers.

Because the population is so small, encounters between humans and black bears in Ohio are relatively rare. Furthermore, black bears are naturally elusive, shy animals that prefer to avoid human contact whenever possible.
