In response to the map updates, Canadian officials have strongly opposed them. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the indigenous Wendat origins of the 400-year-old name, affirming that Canada will continue to recognize it strictly as Lake Ontario. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose state borders the American side of the lake, has also rejected the federal renaming.
Tech companies are taking varied approaches to the localized naming conventions. Both Apple and Google have opted to display "Lake America" exclusively to U.S. users, while Canadians still see "Lake Ontario," and international users view a combination of both labels. However, the mandate has also sparked a wave of digital resistance; legacy navigation platform MapQuest publicly refused to adopt the name change, a stance that subsequently propelled its app to the number one spot on Apple's free App Store charts.
