Located in Hutchinson, Kansas, Strataca is one of the most unique museums in the world, offering visitors a rare opportunity to descend 650 feet below the Earth's surface into a massive, active salt mine.

Here is everything you need to know about visiting this subterranean wonder in 2026.

While Strataca is a must-see, it is important to note that there is an admission fee, and specific safety requirements are in place for younger children.

  • Admission: Tickets typically range from $21 to $35 for basic tours, with "all-access" packages available for around $50. Discounts are often offered for seniors, military, and local residents.

The Underground Experience

Tour Options

  1. The Dark Ride: A 30-minute guided tram tour through sections of the mine that were worked in the 1940s and 50s. You’ll see abandoned equipment and can even pick out a souvenir chunk of salt.
  2. Salt Mine Express: A 15-minute miniature train ride that takes you into areas of the mine left exactly as they were when miners stopped working them over 60 years ago.
  3. Salt Safari Shuttle: A premium, 1-hour adventure limited to 12 people. This tour goes "beyond the ropes" into deeper, un-curated parts of the mine.

History and Modern Mining

Strataca sits within a massive rock salt deposit formed by the Permian Sea over 275 million years ago. While the museum occupies a portion of the mine, active mining still occurs in the surrounding areas.

  • A "Time Capsule": Because the salt environment is naturally sterile and maintains perfect humidity, the mine is used as a high-security storage facility. It houses original Hollywood movie reels, historical documents, and artifacts that would degrade above ground.
  • Industrial Use: The salt currently being mined is primarily used as road salt for de-icing highways and for mineral licks in agriculture.

Know Before You Go

  • Footwear: Closed-toed shoes are strictly required for all visitors entering the mine.
  • Safety Gear: Every visitor is provided with a hard hat, which must be worn at all times while underground.
  • Reservations: Because tours have limited capacity—especially the tram and Safari Shuttle—booking your tickets in advance is highly recommended.
