Quirks & Unexpected Treasures: The Barney Smith Toilet Seat Art Museum
From Childhood Inspiration to a Masterpiece Collection
Barney Smith, a retired master plumber, found his artistic muse in an unusual place. As a boy, inspired by his father's hunting trophy mounted on a toilet seat, he began transforming these humble objects. Over his lifetime, he meticulously embellished and decorated an astounding 1,300 seats! Thankfully, Jason Boso, owner of Truck Yards, acquired and preserved the collection, honoring Smith's legacy.
More Than Just Paint: Stories on Seats
Expect the unexpected! This is not just paint on plastic. Themes emerge: space exploration with the Challenger tribute, vibrant Pokémon displays, and car club emblems. Other seats tell personal tales, commemorating milestones and life passions. It's a quirky blend of Americana, pop culture, and heartfelt expression.
A Legacy of Creative Spirit
Smith's work is a fascinating blend of found-object art and whimsical scrapbooking. He invited visitors to sign his guest books and even donate their own decorated seats. His determination to find a caretaker for his vast collection was fulfilled, and now his daughter carries on the tradition, ensuring its preservation even after Smith is gone.
