Buc-ee’s Greenlights First Wisconsin Location WISCONSIN - After a competitive race between two Wisconsin cities, the winner has emerged.  Oak Creek is officially set to become the home of the first Buc-ee's in the Badger State. Following final approvals from the Plan Commission in late 2025, the Texas-based chain is preparing to break ground on a massive travel center south of Milwaukee, targeting an early 2027 grand opening.

Oak Creek Takes the Lead

While initial buzz focused on a potential site in DeForest (north of Madison), the Oak Creek project at Interstate 94 and Elm Road surged ahead to secure the title of "Wisconsin's First."

What Happened to DeForest?

For months, it seemed DeForest was destined to host the State first location. However, that project encountered significant roadblocks due to infrastructure costs. The proposed site at Interstate 39/90/94 and County Highway V required nearly $15 million in interchange upgrades to handle the expected traffic.

Disputes over who would foot the bill for the biBuc-ee’s, the Village of DeForest, or the state—led to a stalemate. As of January 2026, the DeForest plans are effectively stalled, though not officially dead, as the company focuses its immediate resources on getting the Oak Creek location operational.

The "Cheesehead" ChallengBuc-ee'se’s vs. Kwik Trip

The arrival of Buc-ee’s sets the stage for a major convenience store showdown. Wisconsin is the home turf of Kwik Trip, a beloved regional chain with over 800 locations and a fiercely loyal fanbase.

WhBuc-ee'see’s brings the spectacle (brisket stations, beaver merchandise, and size), Kwik Trip dominates on daily convenience and local integration. Industry analysts are closely watching whether Buc-ee’s can replicate its cult status in a state where Kwik Trip is already king.

Timeline

For now, Wisconsin drivers on I-94 can expect to see construction cranes rising soon, signaling that Beaver Nuggets and kolaches are finally on their way to the Midwest.
