1996: A New Kind of Fundraiser is Born

In 1996, AIDS Fund, a Philadelphia-based organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS services, launched GayBINGO! as a unique and innovative fundraising event. The concept was simple: combine the classic game of bingo with the over-the-top energy of drag performances and a healthy dose of irreverent humor. The Bingo Verifying Divas (BVDs), a group of drag queens, became the face of the event, hosting the games, performing musical numbers, and engaging the audience with their quick wit and outrageous costumes.

Building a Community: From Small Gatherings to Sold-Out Crowds

GayBINGO! quickly gained popularity, growing from small gatherings to sold-out events. The event's welcoming atmosphere, its celebration of LGBTQ+ culture, and its commitment to a vital cause resonated with the Philadelphia community. It became a place where people could have fun, be themselves, and support a worthy cause.

1999: Black-Tie GayBINGO! Adds Glamour

In 1999, organizers decided to "up the drama" and introduced Black-Tie GayBINGO!, an annual gala event that added a layer of elegance and sophistication to the already fabulous mix. This event became a major social occasion, attracting a diverse crowd and raising significant funds for AIDS Fund.

Millions Raised, Lives Impacted

Over nearly three decades, GayBINGO! (both the monthly events and the annual Black-Tie gala) has made a significant impact. The events have raised over $4 million for HIV/AIDS services in the Philadelphia region, supporting organizations that provide vital care, prevention education, and support to those affected by the virus.

A New Chapter: Action Wellness Takes the Helm

In late 2024, AIDS Fund announced the conclusion of its operations after 35 years of service. However, the legacy of GayBINGO! will continue. Action Wellness, another prominent AIDS service organization in Philadelphia, has taken over the production of the event, ensuring that this beloved tradition continues to thrive.

2025: Black-Tie GayBINGO! Returns

The 26th annual Black-Tie GayBINGO!, now under the auspices of Action Wellness, is set for March 22, 2025, at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The event will honor AIDS Fund for its creation and stewardship of GayBINGO!, with former Executive Director Robb Reichard and former staff and board members in attendance.

GayBINGO!'s history is a testament to the power of community, the enduring appeal of fun and laughter, and the ability of a unique event to make a real difference. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a Philadelphia icon, GayBINGO! has entertained countless individuals, raised millions of dollars for a vital cause, and created a lasting legacy of joy, acceptance, and support for the LGBTQ+ community and those affected by HIV/AIDS. With Action Wellness now at the helm, GayBINGO! is poised to continue its important work for years to come.
