Baltimore Maryland - A Brief History

MARYLAND - During the American Revolution, Baltimore was a bustling seaport. Clippers plied the waters, and local waterways were harnessed for flour milling. The town became a major shipbuilding center. In 1797, the United States Navy's first ship, the Constellation, was launched in Baltimore. Today, it has been moored in the city's harbor since 1955.

Baltimore's port is located at the head of the Patapsco River Estuary, above the Chesapeake Bay.  The port is the largest in the state of Maryland. The Port of Baltimore is the main economic center of the state. It is also the location of Johns Hopkins University and the Port of Baltimore International Airport.

Baltimore's culture is very diverse. The city has a robust black population, and the community has developed its distinctive culture over the years. Baltimore has long been a Democratic stronghold. Several professional sports franchises exist in the city, including the Baltimore Ravens, which play in the NFL. Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore in the twentieth century and became the first black American justice on the United States Supreme Court.



The city has also developed a small film industry. Baltimore is home to the nation's oldest all-girls public school, Western High School. The city is also home to the third-oldest public high school in the country, Baltimore City College. The city's population is estimated to reach 622,000 by 2050. This would make it the 24th largest city in the United States.
