5 Major Retail Chains Closing Doors in Arkansas: April 2026

From the Ozarks to the Delta, here are the five major retail chains closing doors in Arkansas

1. Big Lots

Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and a subsequent failure to secure a buyer for its underperforming locations, Big Lots is in the final phase of its liquidation. While some stores in the state remain open under new management, several underproductive sites are scheduled to lock their doors permanently by April 30, 2026. Final "Going Out of Business" sales are reaching their conclusion at:

2. Walgreens

As part of its multi-year "Footprint Optimization Program," Walgreens is closing a significant number of stores nationwide to improve its core retail pharmacy margins. This April, Arkansas is seeing a targeted round of closures where older branches are being consolidated into nearby modernized hubs. Residents in Bentonville and Fayetteville are among those seeing local pharmacy operations cease this month as the company trims its high-density market presence.

3. Express

The fashion retailer Express is "right-sizing" its physical footprint following its bankruptcy reorganization. As the brand pivots toward a digital-first strategy and concentrates on its top-tier "Power Stores," its presence in traditional mall settings is being reduced. The Fayetteville (Northwest Arkansas Mall) and Little Rock (Park Plaza Mall) locations are reaching their final days of operation this month.

4. Macy’s

Macy’s is entering the final stage of its "Bold New Chapter" turnaround plan, which involves shuttering 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026. While the brand is investing heavily in its "Reimagine" stores, its secondary-market department stores are being phased out. At least one regional anchor in the Arkansas market is finalized for closure this April as the company reaches 80% of its nationwide closure goal.

5. Harps Food Stores (Dyer Foods Acquisition)

In a major local grocery shift, Harps Food Stores is finalized to acquire 18 locations from Dyer Foods. While many of these stores will be rebranded and remain open, select underperforming Food Rite, Save-A-Lot, and Piggly Wiggly sites involved in the transaction are being shuttered this month to streamline the transition. This consolidation is part of a broader move to modernize grocery access across North Central Arkansas.
