World's Largest Hand-dug Water Well in Greensburg Kansas

KANSAS - The Big Well in Greensburg, Kansas, is a large historic water well.  Visitors pay a small entrance fee to tour the well. They descend an illuminated stairway to the bottom of the well. Once inside, they can learn about the town's history. It is a great place to take a family or a group of friends for a unique experience.

The Big Well is 109 feet deep and 32 feet wide, making it the world's largest hand-dug water well.  There's even a spiral staircase down into the well. Located at 315 S. Sycamore, the Big Well is open to the public Monday through Saturday and Sundays from noon until 6 pm. Originally used for local water supply, the well served the town until 1932, when it was designated as a museum. It has since received over three million visitors. It is now one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Besides being a museum, the Big Well is also a place to see local history. A visitor center houses vintage Big Well souvenirs and significant debris. You can also see a clock that stopped when Greensburg was destroyed. But don't make this your only reason for visiting Greensburg.



The Big Well is a historic attraction and a tourist destination in Greensburg.  It is the world's largest hand-dug well and is 109 feet deep. A group of workers in 1888 dug it. The well is 32 feet wide and served as a water supply until 1932. It opened as a tourist attraction in 1937.
